- Provided it is safe, ensure valuables, appliances and furniture are elevated off the floor and salvage any items that might be able to be repaired.
- Treat all flood water as contaminated.
- Do not operate any vehicles or electrical appliances that may have been damaged.
- Do not make any non-essential repairs to your home.
- Clean stormwater gutters and drains and keep overland flow paths free of obstructions
- If it is not safe to return home or a power loss means your home is uninhabitable, talk to us about possible temporary accommodation options.

Tips for weather-related claims
- Contents claim: Please make a list of the items that are damaged within the claim form, including plenty of photos and/or a video showing the damage and the individual damaged items. Assessors are under pressure due to the sheer volume of claims and providing this information will save time.
- Motor vehicle claim: If your vehicle has been submerged or partially submerged in flood water, please do not try to start or drive the vehicle. There may be silt and/or debris in the engine or water damaged electrics along with potential contamination issues. Please arrange for your vehicle to be towed to your local repairer to inspect and identify any possible damage as soon as possible.
- Personal or commercial property claims: Treat all flood water as contaminated. You can lift carpet and underlay (providing it’s safe to do so) and wear protective clothing such as gloves, masks and appropriate waterproof footwear. Take plenty of detailed photos and move the contaminated items outside.
- All claims: Do not dispose of any items as an Assessor or Loss Adjustor may need to view these.
Supporting information to help progress your claim
